Why act now

Council tax is a priority debt — and councils act fast

Council tax is a mandatory local tax that funds services like schools, emergency services and waste collection. Because councils have some of the strongest collection powers of any creditor, missed payments can escalate to court action and bailiff enforcement within weeks. The good news: every stage of that process can be dealt with, and the earlier you act, the easier it is.

What we do for you

  • Work to stop bailiff action and enforcement
  • Negotiate affordable repayment plans with your council
  • Help you access council tax discounts, exemptions and support schemes
  • Provide expert advice on debt solutions, including IVAs

What an IVA can do

  • Write off unsecured debt you can't afford
  • Combine everything into one fixed monthly payment
  • Stop creditor harassment and enforcement
  • Freeze interest and charges

After the IVA period (typically five years), any remaining qualifying debt can be legally written off. How IVAs work with council tax →

FAQs

Council tax debt help — common questions

How much council tax debt do I need to get help?
There's no minimum to speak to us. For an IVA specifically, your total unsecured debts (council tax plus credit cards, loans and other debts) usually need to exceed £7,000 — but if you owe less, we can point you towards other options such as payment plans, Council Tax Support or a Debt Relief Order.
Can you deal with the council or bailiffs for me?
Yes. Once you authorise us, we can contact the council or their enforcement agents on your behalf, so you don't have to handle stressful calls and letters alone.
What does it cost?
Advice is free. If you enter an IVA, costs are charged for preparing your proposal and administering the arrangement for its full term (usually 5 years) — typically £3,650 in total, although creditors may adjust this when they vote. Costs are only recovered once your arrangement is approved, from the monthly payments you make into it.
Will this affect my credit score?
Checking your options with us won't affect your credit score. If you enter a debt solution such as an IVA, it will be recorded on your credit report for six years from its start date, which can make obtaining credit harder during that time.
